Craigmillar Castle
The present castle was begun before 1400. Sir John de Preston acquired the estate of Gorton, near Roslin in 1342, and in 1374 his son, Simon (1) acquired Craigmillar from William de Capella.
In the mid 16th Century Craigmillar Castle and the Prestons became caught up in international events. In May 1544 Henry V111's army landed at Leith attempting to force a marriage between Henry's son Prince Edward, and the two year old Mary Queen of Scots. This castle is well preserved and if you visit with children they'll enjoy running about the couryard, gardens and there are spectacular views from the Tower House.
