Troon
Troon's name is derived from 'trwyn', a Celtic word meaning 'point' or 'nose', the name also refers to the peninsula on which the town sits. Historically most of its trade revolved around the harbour due to its coastal position. Docks were added in the 19th Century for the merchant fleets and in 1860 a shipyard followed. It was one of the top ten coal ports in the UK by 1900. Shipbuilding in recent times has all but gone, but it still does remain an important part of the town's history.

This year's Open Gold Championship takes place in nearby Turnberry (July 16th-19th).

Population of Troon
Troon's population is on the increase with numbers around 15,000. This is increased due to the number of visiting tourists, daytrippers, sailors and golfers all year round.
Where is Troon?
The town is close to Ayr, Prestwick airport and less than an hour's drive from Glasgow. Troon is well positioned on the west coast looking out over to the Isle of Arran. Driving on the coastal roads on a sunny day you will find it hard to believe that you are driving in Scotland. The view across to the Isle of Arran is on a par with driving the coastal route to Amalfi, Italy.
