How to Emigrate to Australia if you’re over 55?

It can be a difficult decision, giving up your life as you know it here in the UK for a new future in the sunshine with your children and grandchildren settled in Australia. What about your extended family, neighbours and friends? The world is a smaller place now with the widespread use of the internet allowing you to stay in touch.

The easiest way to emigrate to Australia if you are over 55 is if you have more children living settled over there than here in the UK. If your children hold Permanent Residency Visas or are Citizens then it is quite easy to apply to immigrate. The only downside is the time to wait or the amount it will cost to apply. Currently if you apply to emigrate on a certain Parent Visa you can be placed in a queue, the waiting time is over 10years. Another option for you is to pay a huge second instalment charge for a different type of visa. This is non-refundable and per person costs over £16,000 each.

To apply you have to complete a Form 40, which is relatively straightforward The Form 40 can be filled in an afternoon if you have all the information at hand. A good tip is to download the form, fill in most of it as a practise run, and have another sheet of paper to fill in any parts you are unsure on how to answer. One of the most common questions at this part is how to add holiday visa information if you haven’t kept any old holiday visas. Your sponsor has to complete their form and attach necessary paperwork and then send it back to you, so that all the paperwork is included together. Your sponsor does not have to be your child. You will also have to pass Health and Character tests these are required once you have a Case Officer.

Do not send original documents with your application all documents have to be certified. Basically, this means that a Solicitor or JP sights the original documents then copies, stamps and signs these copies for you to send with your application. Phone around for prices on this as they can vary dramatically from £5 up to £75 per document. Presently you also have to include 4 passport size photos each with your names printed at the back.

Once you’ve completed the form, received back your sponsors form, checked all your other relevant documentation you will need to either include a check, or pay by credit card for payment. You will have to ask your bank to issue you with a check made out to the correct office with the first instalment amount in Australian Dollars. They will charge for this anywhere between £20 and £55. Finally you can then face the final hurdle, which courier to use to send your documents. There are a lot to choose from, on average it will take between 6-9 days to arrive at a cost of approximately £50.
