Bearsden           Back To Glasgow Forum

Directions:
Only 6 miles north west from the heart of Glasgow, Bearsden has grown into an an affluent and leafy suburb for the well to do of Glasgow. The town is part of East Dunbartonshire. At the intersection of the A809 Drymen Road and A808 Roman Road, is the part of Bearsden known as Bearsden Cross. Bearsden primary school, the Burgh Hall and Bearsden Cross Parish Church  are all located nearby the Cross. This is seen by many to be the heart of Bearsden, where local shops, restaurants and cafes are also located.

Wee Bit of History:
The site of the Roman Antonine Wall is in Bearsden, the first known settlement on the site was a 2.5 acre (10,000 m²) Roman Fort in the second century AD. Under Emperor Antonius Pious, between 142 and 144AD, the Romans built a stone and turf fortification, called the Antonine Wall. Ruins of which can be seen on a short stroll around New Kilpatrick Cemetery.

Train Stations
There are three railway stations, Bearsden, Hillfoot and Westerton. Most railway stations are named after the town they're in- but not (originally) in Bearsden, it's the other way round. Bearsden was originally called New Kilpatrick, later New Kirk and was finally renamed after the construction of Bearsden Station in 1863.
